Merchant’s Stall
As you weave through the morning market, a sharp whistle cuts through the chatter. The hooded merchant is leaning halfway across his counter, waving you over with far more enthusiasm than seems appropriate this early in the day.
“There you are! Come here. Quickly!” He checks over both shoulders before reaching beneath the stall, “A caravan rolled through before sunrise. Strange lot. Wouldn’t tell me where they’d been, wouldn’t tell me where they were headed… but they were very interested in getting rid of this.”
With a flourish, he places a small polished fragment onto the counter, “Cost me three silver pieces and a perfectly good wheel of cheese.” he stares, “…I’m beginning to suspect the cheese may have been worth more.”
The merchant nudges the fragment toward you, “You’ve got that irritating habit of recognizing these things. So… what exactly did I buy?”
