I have an older Alienware system that still runs games really well, but it isn’t eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade. With Windows 10 support ending soon, I’m considering whether it’s time to upgrade or buy a new system. Since the hardware still performs great, I’m leaning toward upgrading only the necessary components. Beyond the official requirements, what would you recommend as the practical minimum specs for a solid Windows 11 gaming setup?
Hmm, depends on a few factors - one of the most important being, what kind of usage does your PC currently get?
Safe to say we’re all gamers here, my usual go-to answer would be to look into the latest and greatest AMD offers (9800X3D CPU or a 9070 XT GPU), but if you’re looking to game on a budget - that changes a lot of things and options. (Not in a bad way!)
What are the specs of your current PC?
Alienware is great but be mindful that they also tend to use proprietary components so if you upgrade a motherboard normally the power supply won’t work and vice versa
If your wanting to go all out
9800x3d and 9070xt and you will be golden for quite a while
If your wanting to do a more budget but still great
9600x/9700x and the 16gb 9060xt is a great way to go
Here are my current system specs.
Device Name: Odin
Processor: Intel(R) Core™ i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
Installed RAM: 32.0 GB
Storage: 932 GB HDD HGST HTS721010A9E630, 238 GB SSD THNSN5256GPUK NVMe TOSHIBA 256GB|
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (8 GB), Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 (128 MB)
Device ID: 4CA3EFE4-FA09-4CC4-B903-37409BE4ABA7
Product ID: 00330-80000-00000-AA626
System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
My plan is to go AMD across the board (CPU/GPU) next.
Not bad specs, would like to know the RAM Mhz. Windows 11 has pretty top spec needs but I think there are ways to help navigate TMP 2.0 requirement and Secure boot if you are having those issues.
Based on your current components, I would not modify your current Alienware system but instead I suggest you build a new system, using an AMD AM5 CPU and an AMD Ryzen 9000 series GPU. Keep the old system as a backup or for a guest to use when they visit. So much has changed over the years - CPU sockets, memory sockets and performance from GPUs. Trying to use old hardware likely won’t save you much at all.
@NIELEY, what did you decide to do with your current Alienware system? The holidays are coming up fast, and I (for one) easily find it appropriate to order a few computer parts to help me celebrate.
