FSR 4 on RDNA3 (RX 7900 XTX): Official Support, INT8 Mods, and Real-World Experience

With FSR 4 now being pushed as a headline feature for RDNA4 GPUs, a lot of us RDNA3 owners (RX 7900 XTX, 7900 XT, 7800 XT, etc.) are wondering what the realistic future looks like for our cards in terms of upscaling, framegen, and overall longevity.

Right now, AMD officially markets FSR 4 and its FP8-accelerated path as an RX 9000–series feature, mainly due to the dedicated hardware and higher AI throughput on RDNA4. However, the leaked FSR 4 INT8 build and SDK files show that an INT8 version can run on older hardware, including RDNA2 and RDNA3, and even some Nvidia RTX cards through DP4a/INT8 paths. Community tests on cards like the RX 7900 XTX already show that FSR 4 INT8 can deliver noticeably better image quality than FSR 3.1, especially in fine detail like foliage, hair, and distant geometry, but at the cost of higher latency, power draw, and a non‑trivial FPS hit versus native FSR 4 on RDNA4

We will definitely officially confirm what we can when it happens. Can’t say much on speculation or the unknown. We will definitely keep ya in the know though as we move forward here and our socials.

I feel RDNA3 GPUs will get some form of support in late '26. RDNA2 and lower? Rest in peace there. Shame since my trusty 6800 XT can still hang, but I do understand.

As we see, RDNA2 can use FSR 4, alot instructions and videos on youtube

All that’s true, but it is also true that AMD is putting RDNA2 on the back burner and their main focus is on RDNA4 and RDNA3 as shown in their “Maintenance mode” fiasco a couple weeks ago. So I wouldn’t expect those features at all or anytime soon if AMD decides to give RDNA2 FSR4. Only time will tell, however.

If it happens in late 2026, I’ll be already rocking a different GPU.

Thanks for the breakdown! FSR 4 INT8 looking usable on RDNA3 is exciting, even with the latency and power trade-offs. The improvement in fine details like foliage and hair is promising—curious to see how it performs across more games.

This has been the most promising response I have seen on the topic, made by an AMD representative. I am an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT user, and in addition to FSR4, I would like to know how well RDNA 3 is being prepared to enter the DXR 1.2 and Vulkan-equivalent era? Potentially, both RDNA 3 and 4 stand to improve.

That said, I have long been a Team Red supporter. I have only bought AMD GPUs since the HD 4000, and I have older Radeon GPUs. I have been hard on AMD Radeon to continue not only game optimisation, but also “Feature-support” where the architecture is capable. I do this because I care. There is nothing that means more to a customer than being recognized, and that is what earns loyalty.

I also get that the industries are pivoting to enterprise solutions, but consumers are still here. This is where I hope that this community can be a beacon that is heeded.

Cyberpunk 2077 1440p - FSR4 INT8 Quality vs. Native on a 7900 GRE (click image to view):

Better image quality and better performance than native… We should be having this already.

As a fellow 7900XTX owner this would make me very happy!!!

Totally agree with this take.

It’s clear FSR 4 is being positioned as an RDNA4 feature more for marketing than pure technical reasons. The INT8 builds prove RDNA3 can run it, and on cards like the 7900 XTX the image quality boost over FSR 3.1 is real — especially in fine details. That said, the extra latency, power draw, and FPS hit make it feel more like a workaround than a true upgrade.

For RDNA3 owners, FSR 4 INT8 is a nice option to have, but not a magic bullet. The hardware still has plenty of raw power; it’s just obvious AMD’s AI-focused features will increasingly favor newer GPUs.

Meaning a new AMD card or (gasp) an nVidia card?

AMD does not care one bit about it’s gamer customer base so long as the AI boom is going on. They want people to buy the new hotness for features and locking their loyal customers out from getting them through official support. AMD has already lost all my confidence for buying another GPU when I am ready to upgrade my 7900xtx. I got a generation of proper support before they told me to go F myself. I love supporting the underdog but not when the underdog is also an abusive piece of crap.
